Holding Space Yoga Teacher Training

Holding Space: The Energy & Anatomy of Touch dives into the way we communicate with our clients/students, often inviting them to go deeper. By using Thai yoga as a way to explore the ideas of holding space, we come to understand both the physical and energetic qualities of touch.

In Holding Space, this 20-hour experiential course explores yogic touch from the perspective of the physical and energetic (kosha) bodies. Using observation and hands-on practice, students will learn how to appropriately and safely move bodies, gain an understanding of the intention of touch and how to work with various levels of pressure and intensity, how to work with boundaries (yours and the client’s), and how to hold space.

Healthy and effective touch has the power to encourage insight at all levels of experience and to cultivate deep presence. As yoga teachers and therapists, we use touch to communicate with our clients/students, inviting them to feel into the present moment and all that it offers physically, emotionally, and energetically. Holding space comes from an understanding of both the physical and energetic qualities of touch, as well as the powerful experiences that can result from our connection with one another. As we become more fluent holding space for our own experiences, we gain skills and confidence to hold space for others.

This 20-hour experiential course invites you to develop your existing skills for self-observation, partner dialogue and healthy touch. To practice the art of holding space, we will explore a variety of practices, including basic Thai Yoga Therapy, which can teach us how to respectfully and safely move and touch another person’s body, while sharing dialogue to communicate levels of pressure, intensity, boundary, and satisfaction!

William Hufschmidt’s (E-RYT 500) journey with healing began at age 14 as he recovered from a car accident. Watching his breath and his thoughts helped to manage the pain and healing of a fractured femur. Progressing through months of traction, a wheelchair, a few casts, and eventually crutches, it took William two years to fully regain control of his body. This early experience fortified his belief that we can heal from anything if we consciously navigate our healing process. In 1989, William took his first yoga class with Lorna Brown, and subsequently taught his first classes with her guidance and encouragement. In 2001, William completed the 200-hour-level Yoga Teacher training at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, and in 2007, completed Kripalu’s 500-hour training. In 2002, William first studied Thai Yoga Therapy with Patricia Kilpatrick and Saul David Raye, and in 2006 studied at Thailand’s esteemed Wat Po in Bangkok, then continuing on with “Mama Lek” Chaiya in Chiang Mai. In 2012, William completed training with the Guild for Structural Integration in the Rolf Method for Structural Integration. William’s teachers are Yoganand Michael Carroll, Vidya Carolyn Dell’uomo, Saul David Raye, Pierce Salguero, and life itself. As a teacher, William empowers students to explore their edges and potentials. “We all do not walk the same path towards self-discovery.
